'Will win 110 seats in first phase': Amit Shah predicts BJP sweep after record turnout in Bengal polls

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a fierce attack on Friday Mamata Banerjee And his government, after a massive voter turnout in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, claims that the people of the state have voted for change and that the Bharatiya Janata Party is on its way to an absolute majority.Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Shah said the exit of the Trinamool Congress government was imminent and projected a landslide victory for the BJP.“Didi jane wali hai, BJP ana wala hai.”He further said that voters have already made up their minds in the opening phase of polling.“People decided to vote for Didi.”Shah claimed that the BJP’s internal assessment showed strong gains in seats polled in the first phase.“From the feedback we got, the people of Bengal decided their future at the first stage… 92.98% polling in 52 constituencies in 16 districts means Didi is going and BJP is coming, fear is going and faith is coming. We did an assessment last night with all the committee members…. Out of 152 seats BJP is going to win more than 110 seats… It means after the second round of elections, we are going to have BJP government in Bengal completely. He said that the first phase of voting reflected the people’s demand for political change.“Yesterday, in the first phase of the 2026 Bengal Assembly polls, breaking all records, the people of Bengal voted with unprecedented enthusiasm and enthusiasm for change in Bengal. The voter turnout is encouraging for those who believe in democracy across the country… I would like to congratulate and thank all the voters who braved the fear of voting in the first phase of Bengal. Successfully, and the voters of the second phase will continue this journey from fear to trust.Shah also promised that if voted to power, the BJP would appoint a Bengali-born, Bengali-speaking chief minister and focus on law and order, protection of women and governance reforms.“Formation of a BJP government in Bengal is very important. Our first priority will be to provide security to the women of Bengal and free them from fear.”Targeting the ruling party for corruption, Shah Banerjee accused the government of institutionalizing corruption.“Mamata Banerjee has institutionalized corruption. More than 10,000 crores of corruption in Bengal through more than 30 scams. Our government must provide a corruption-free, transparent administration.”He added that cases of alleged corruption would be investigated by a retired judge of the Supreme Court and the guilty would face punishment.Shah also accused the state government of allowing extortion and syndicate rule, saying businessmen would no longer have to say “nephew tax” or “nephew tax” under the BJP government. On the conduct of the elections, Shah praised the Election Commission of India, CAPF and Bengal Police for the peaceful polling.“Because not a single person has died in Bengal after a long time (during elections). Such an election has taken place, which is a wonder in itself…”Asserting that the momentum was firmly with his party, Shah concluded: “I am witnessing a tsunami (of support for the BJP). I think we will win seats by a huge margin.”The comments came as campaigning intensified ahead of the next phase of Bengal assembly elections, with the BJP seeking to oust Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress after more than a decade in power.
