But now the police has claimed to have solved the mystery of this high-profile theft.
Hardoi Police have arrested 16 people including two child molesters and recovered cash worth Rs 1 crore 29 lakh from their possession. Police say that some accused are still absconding. This incident took place at the house of Pankaj Aggarwal, a wholesale grocery businessman living in Railwayganj area of Kotwali city. Initially the suspicion fell on three servants working in the house and the police investigation also started from there.
When the investigation progressed, it came to light that two minor servants working in the house and an employee Shobhit were the first link in the entire conspiracy. He knew how much cash was there in the house, where the keys of the cupboard were kept and what was the daily routine of the family. He conveyed this information to his colleagues sitting outside.
According to the police, sleeping pills were allegedly mixed in the family’s food as part of planning. When the entire family was fast asleep, the accused entered the house through the terrace. Going to Pankaj Aggarwal’s room, the key of the cupboard kept under the pillow was taken out, the cupboard was opened and eight bags full of notes were loaded into the vehicle parked outside. Within a few minutes the entire gang fled with crores of rupees.
How were the layers revealed after the theft?
The police started the investigation by forming a joint team of SOG, SWAT and local police. During surveillance and interrogation, the links of the accused started getting linked one by one. Investigation revealed that the amount stolen was so much that many more people were also involved to hide it.
Police raided different locations and arrested 14 accused, while detained two child molesters. Rs 1 crore 28 lakh 99 thousand 310 were recovered from them. Police say that some members of the gang are still absconding. Their search is on and it is expected that after interrogation the remaining cash can also be recovered.
There is another aspect under discussion in this whole matter. The house from which such a huge amount of cash was found has also raised the question that why so much cash was kept in the house in the era of digital transactions? After such huge amount of cash has come forward, now the Income Tax Department and GST Department can also keep an eye on this matter.

The businessman had not registered the stolen amount while registering the case. Later, the whole story came to light during the police investigation. Police say that two minors working in the house and Shobhit were aware of how much money was there in the house. Where are the keys kept, whereas Ajay Shukla, resident of Belaha village of Tadianwa police station, Shivam and Badan who are residents of Kotwali city and work as laborers in the same area. These people planned theft in the house and made a complete recce by befriending the domestic servants.
Domestic servants allegedly mixed sleeping pills in the food. When the whole family slept, Ajay Shukla and Badan entered the house along with the three servants. Shivam remained standing outside. After this, they loaded the bags full of notes into the vehicle and fled away. The gang also included many other people to hide and dispose of the money. Among them, cash was given to Deepak Sahu, Sunny Gupta, Aman of Madiyawa of Lucknow, Param Kishore, Keshav, Shivam, Sunny Balmiki, Neeraj, Prince and Mehfooz of Hardoi district.
ASP East Hardoi Subodh Gautam said that on the night of 16-17 July, there was theft in the house of Railwayganj businessman Pankaj Aggarwal. He gave a formal complaint that three of his servants had stolen the bags of money kept in the cupboard. While investigating this case, the police have recovered approximately Rs 1 crore 29 lakh. 14 accused have been arrested. Two child molesters are in custody. Some accused are still out of the reach of the police.
