The United Nations, Multilateralism and International Law Under Attack: UNGA President

New Delhi: Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar Discussed with inspection United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Annalena Beyerbock on Tuesday on issues including the impact of AI and the West Asia conflict.Jaishankar said in a post on X that he emphasized the need for a reformed multilateralism during the talks that reflects today’s realities, particularly in the Global South, while thanking Bierbock for his leadership and contributions. Bierbock later told a press conference that the world is witnessing growing geopolitical tensions, growing divisions and pressure on the UN’s three pillars: peace and security, development and human rights. “Today, the United Nations, multilateralism and international law are not only under pressure, but under direct attack,” he said.“No country, regardless of its size or power, can tackle today’s complex global challenges – such as climate change, the global pandemic and the economic impact of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine or closing the Strait of Hormuz – on its own,” he said.Beerbock rejects US President Donald Trump’s board of peace plan that envisions permanent membership fees. “Because every country, no matter how big or small, how powerful or rich, has a seat at the table; because you don’t get peace for anyone in the world if you pay a fee to join,” he said. Trump’s Board for Peace for Gaza has been called a potential rival to the UN.On the need to reform the United Nations, he said the United Nations, while essential, needs to reform itself to be more efficient, more agile and better serve on the ground.
