'Keep communal forces at bay': Congress offers 'conditional' support to Vijay TV in Tamil Nadu; DMK ditch

New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday extended its support to actor-politician Vijay’s TVK after it emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, but failed to cross the majority mark.In a letter, the party, which won 5 seats in the 243-member assembly, said its support to TVK would be conditional on keeping out of the alliance any communal forces that do not believe in India’s constitution.“The Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), Thiru C Vijay, has formally requested the Indian National Congress (INC) to extend support to form the government in Tamil Nadu. The people of Tamil Nadu, especially the youth, have given a very clear, strong and overwhelming verdict for a secular, progressive and welfarist government that believes in constitutional principles. They chose Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) under the leadership of MR. Vijay will form the next government,” the letter read.

“Our support will keep TVK away from this alliance conditional on any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India. This alliance between TVK and the Tamil Nadu Congress will try to bring back the glory days of Perunthalivara Kamaraj in Tamil Nadu, with a strong commitment to the constitutional ideas of Thanthai Periyar and the social justice concept of BR. For decades to come,” it added.
