Iran at UN accuses US of nuclear double standards, misuse of NPT platform | India News

At the UN, Iran accused the US of abusing the nuclear double standard, the NPT platform

Permanent Mission of Iran United Nations The United States has accused the United States of using the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference to misrepresent Tehran’s nuclear program and divert attention from Washington’s own violations, as tensions between the two countries rise at the United Nations. In a statement shared on its official X account, the mission said all of Iran’s enriched uranium is “under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and there are no reports of Iran removing even one gram of nuclear material.”The statement also criticized international organizations, saying the UN Security Council, the IAEA director general and the board of governors “failed not only to condemn this unlawful attack, but most regrettably took actions that reversed the roles of victim and aggressor.”Iran says the United States is portraying its nuclear program as a threat while using the NPT forum in what it describes as a political narrative, ignoring broader disarmament obligations.Iran’s UN envoy in New York, Amir Saeed Irvani, warned that lasting stability in the Gulf requires an end to ongoing aggression against Iran, as well as the non-repetition of such actions and respect for Iran’s sovereignty.Speaking at the conference, he said Iran supports freedom of navigation in important waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, but warned that continued military escalation could undermine regional and global security. He called on the UN Security Council to deal with the situation.Ervani alleged that since February 28, the United States and Israel have engaged in a “comprehensive and unjustified war of aggression” against Iran in violation of international law and the UN Charter, particularly Article 2(4), adding that the actions have undermined maritime security. The developments come amid a sharp exchange between Washington and Tehran at the NPT review conference in New York, where Iran was chosen as a co-chair for the month-long meeting.US official Christopher Yao criticized Iran’s choice, calling it an “affront” to the deal. He said, “It is undeniable that Iran has long shown contempt for the non-proliferation commitments of the NPT” and described the move as “shameful and an embarrassment to the credibility of this conference”.Reza Najafi, Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, dismissed the comments as “baseless and politically motivated”.“It is inexplicable that the United States, as the only state that has used nuclear weapons and that continues to expand and modernize its nuclear arsenal… wants to position itself as an arbiter of compliance,” he said. The dispute comes as the nuclear issue is central to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Iran cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, although Tehran considers its program to be for peaceful purposes.
