Congress condemns killings in Manipur, says governments failed to use constitutional powers properly
New Delhi: The Manipur unit of the Congress on Thursday alleged that the recurring violence in the state was due to the inability of both the state and central governments to properly exercise their constitutional powers. The statement came a day after three suspected militants shot dead three church leaders in Kangpokpi, and one in Noni district.State Congress chief O Ibobi Singh said, “We strongly condemn the killings. Three people from one community were killed on Wednesday morning, while a civilian from another community was killed in the evening in what appears to be an act of revenge.”And Ibobi Singh also questioned the Centre’s response, saying, “How long will the central government remain a silent spectator to the series of killings taking place in the state? It seems the state has been left on its own, and communities are being allowed to indulge in violence.”Referring to the communal violence that started in 2023, Singh said, “Even the Supreme Court had earlier observed that law and order had completely broken down in the state.”The Congress leader also said, “Communal killings can never bring any solution. It’s time to stay away from revenge,” again pointing out that it is the state government’s responsibility to maintain law and order.“The constitutional powers given to the government are not being used properly by both the state and central governments. I believe, this is the reason for the unrest,” said O Ibobi Singh.
