‘Black day for Centre, they felt a shock for first time’: Priyanka on delimitation bill defeat | India News
New Delhi: MP for Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi Bhadra on Saturday hailed the defeat of the limitation bill in Parliament as a “victory for democracy” and accused the Center of conspiring to change the country’s federal structure. While addressing a press conference, Priyanka said that the Center is planning to use women to stay in power.“What happened yesterday is a huge victory for democracy. The government’s conspiracy to change the federal structure and undermine democracy has been defeated and stopped. It is a victory for the constitution, a victory for the country and a victory for the unity of the opposition, and it was clearly visible on the faces of the ruling party leaders,” the Congress leader said.“I think it’s a conspiracy that somehow they have to stay in power… So, to achieve that, how are they planning to use women to stay in power permanently… They thought that if it passes, they will win. If it doesn’t pass, then they will become saviors of women by labeling other parties as anti-feminists… We know it’s not easy for women to be saviors,” she added.Priyanka asked the Center to roll back the bill, which was passed unanimously in 2023. “It’s a black day for them (Centre) because for the first time they felt a shock, which they deserved. Today women’s issues are growing fast. The struggle is growing. Women are not stupid. They see everything. That PR and media hype will no longer work. If you want to do something concrete, bring back the bill, which was passed with support from all parties, Priyanka 2020.” said“If you need to make a few small tweaks to it to make it work now, do it and implement it now. Give women their rights now. But don’t try to confuse them by moving it around and attaching it to other things. do it now We are all ready,” he said. Her comments came after the bill, which proposes to protect women through a restrictive practice, failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, with 298 members voting in favor and 230 opposed.Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced that the Constitution Amendment Bill had not been passed. After the results, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government would not proceed with the remaining two interlinked bills. The BJP has accused opposition parties of obstructing historic reforms aimed at ensuring 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. Union Home Minister Amit Shah alleged that the Congress, TMC and other parties had blocked the passage of the bill and warned of political consequences. However, the opposition maintains that it supports women’s reservation in principle but opposes linking it to restrictions and the census process. Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi described the bill as an attempt to change India’s electoral structure, while several Congress leaders called the vote a defense of democratic values.
