New Delhi: Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar spoke with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Aragchi on Wednesday and exchanged views on the latest developments on the US-Iran ceasefire, bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues, according to the Iranian embassy here. Jaishankar told X that he received a call from Araghchi. “There were detailed discussions on various aspects of the current situation. We agreed to stay in close contact,” he said. It was the sixth conversation between the two foreign ministers since the outbreak of the West Asian conflict on February 28 and the subsequent threat over the Strait of Hormuz. It is understood that Jaishankar stressed the need to resolve the issue through dialogue and diplomacy and emphasized safe passage for commercial shipping through the Straits. The conversation also took place ahead of the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in India next month. Iran is a member of the group and Aragachi is expected to attend the meeting. However, there is no official confirmation yet. The BRICS have so far struggled to speak with a single voice on the conflict, and last week’s meeting of special envoys in India, which is the current group chair, ended without a joint statement for lack of a consensus. India attributed this to the presence of conflicting countries in the grouping. After weeks of Iran’s blockade of the strait, the United States imposed its own naval blockade on Iranian imports to force Tehran to reopen the strait. President Trump has discussed with US oil companies how to mitigate the effects of a possible month-long blockade of Iranian ports, according to a Reuters report from Washington. Tehran has warned of “unprecedented military action” against the continued US blockade of Iranian-linked vessels.
