Up to 250 feared missing after boat capsizes in Andaman Sea: UN

Dhaka: Around 250 people, including children, are feared missing after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals capsized in the Andaman Sea, the United Nations said on Tuesday, Ahsan Tasnim reported. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement, “The trawler, which was leaving Teknaf in the southern part of Bangladesh and bound for Malaysia, sank due to strong winds, rough seas and overcrowding”.UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration say promises of good wages abroad, often combined with misinformation spread by smuggling networks, force individuals, Rohingya and Bangladeshis, to take significant risks. “This incident reflects the dire consequences of chronic displacement,” the UN agency said. “We urgently call on the international community to increase solidarity and continue funding for assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as well as support for the Bangladeshi host community,” they said.
