‘I never dreamed of films’

He further said, ‘I have knocked on many doors in life. Have also worked in night shifts. Whenever I wanted something, I first thought about how much I really needed it. Then only your financial condition decides how much you should want.
Debt collector and father’s bullet bike
Vijay Sethupathi not only remembers the jobs that he did during the days of compulsion, he also remembers the days when debt collectors used to come to his house. He told that he always used to sit with his father during those difficult times.
He said, ‘People say that youth is full of poverty and struggle. I have seen all this since childhood. This was life for me.
Vijay further said, ‘Whenever debt collectors came to the house or someone used to sit and talk, I used to sit with my father. I used to deal with these things. Vijay Sethupathi was seen getting emotional while remembering a small habit of his father. ‘My father used to come home every night at around 9.30. He used to park his Bullet bike and bring fried rice for us, which we all used to eat together.
It was felt in Vijay Sethupathi’s voice that the weight of this small childhood memory is more than any award kept on his shelf.
Journey from small jobs to Indian cinema
Born in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu in 1978, Vijay Sethupathi came to Chennai in his childhood. He was brought up in Ennore area of North Chennai. Vijay has always described himself as a below average student, who had no interest in sports or any other activity. But from a very young age he had understood what deprivation was.
During his studies, he worked as a salesman in a retail store, cashier in a fast food outlet and telephone booth operator. Later he completed his B.Com studies from Dhanraj Baid Jain College. Within a week of finishing college, Vijay started working as an accounts assistant in a wholesale cement business and later moved to Dubai as an accountant.
