New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi She wrote about women empowerment on social media ahead of the special session of Parliament on Thursday.In a post on X, the prime minister said the country is poised to take a “historic step” in women’s empowerment as lawmakers prepare to discuss a landmark bill on women’s reservation framework.
“In the special session of Parliament starting today, our country is going to take a historic step towards women empowerment. Honor to our mothers and sisters is honor to the nation,” he wrote.The post also included a Sanskrit verse highlighting the role of women in eradicating ignorance and enlightening society with the light of knowledge.
Women’s Reservation Bill in focus
The special session scheduled between April 16 and 18 is expected to take up an amendment to implement the Women’s Reservation Act aimed at ensuring one-third representation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from the 2029 general elections.The Center is seeking massive political support for this move. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi urged opposition parties to support the amendment, saying it reflected the aspirations of “every sister and daughter of this country”.Apart from the reservation bill, the government is also set to introduce key laws including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-third Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Boundary Bill, 2026.
The opposition has expressed concern over the demarcation
While opposition parties have expressed support for the speedy implementation of women’s reservations, they have expressed concern over the proposed restrictive practices associated with the reforms.Leaders are expected to meet to finalize their strategy for the session, even as protests have erupted in some states. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin opposed the boundary proposal, calling for resistance against what he described as a move to affect the state’s representation.The Center has proposed an increase in Lok Sabha seats from 543 to a maximum of 850 as part of broader reforms, a move that has sparked a wide-ranging political debate ahead of the session.
