Tamil Nadu CM swearing-in: Short of majority by just 10 seats TVK chief Vijay to take oath on May 7 – but how will it form government? | India News
New Delhi: TVK Pradhan Vijay is all set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7 after winning the state assembly elections with 108 seats, ANI reported on Tuesday citing sources. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.Vijay’s party emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections but failed to cross the majority mark by just 10 seats. TVK is yet to decide which party to tie up with.
How will Vijay form the government?
Form coalitions for majority government
To secure a majority and form the government, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam may seek the support of smaller parties like the Congress, PMK, Left Party, CPM and VCK, which together can help the party cross the majority. On forming an alliance with TVK, AICC in-charge Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar said the party leadership will take a call.“People of Tamil Nadu, they have voted for a change. Especially the youth and women have moved towards TVK and that is why TVK is getting such huge numbers. I have already submitted a report to our Congress President, Kharge ji, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul ji, and General Secretary of the organization Venugopal ji. They all told ANI to call no.Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi congratulated Vijay after his landslide victory on Monday. “I have spoken to Thiru Vijay and congratulated him on the great results of TVK. This order reflects the growing voice of the youth which cannot and will not be ignored. My sincere thanks to the Congress workers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for their hard work and support. I reiterate that the Congress Party will continue to protect and serve the people of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” he said in a post on X.In response, Vijay said, “My sincere thanks to the honorable Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha for the invitation and kind wishes! We will remain committed to excellence in public service, and to preserve the cultural ethos of our state which requires collective cooperation. Beyond politics, we will give priority to the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.”Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the TVK chief for the team’s “impressive performance”.“Thank you to the voters of Tamil Nadu who supported NDA in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. We will always be at the forefront of solving people’s problems and improving their lives. Congratulations to TVK for their impressive performance. The Center will leave no stone unturned to further the progress of Tamil Nadu and the welfare of its people.”Vijay thanked him and said the party “looks forward to the central government’s support in this endeavour.”“Thank you, Hon’ble @PMOIndia, for your wishes. The welfare of our people is our only goal. Beyond politics, we will focus on the progress of the state and the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. We look forward to the support of the central government in this endeavour,” he said in a post on X.
Form a minority government
If the winning party does not form a coalition, there is an option to form a minority government as the single largest party.“Vijay does not need to form a majority government. He can be invited by the Governor to form the government and do a floor test and dare DMK and AIADMK to vote for him,” PTI quoted political commentator Sumanth Raman as saying. However, if TVK forms a minority government, it will have to rely on the support of opposition parties to pass a law smoothly in the assembly.
defection
With both the DMK and AIADMK alliances weakened after the election results, the TVK may also explore the possibility of getting support from rival camps through defections. Riding on the political momentum created by Vijay’s rise, the party could attract separate legislators from the established coalition or disaffected factions that see a TVK-led government as the center of new political power in the state.
