SC invokes spirituality to urge Kapur kin to settle row
NEW DELHI: Calling for spirituality in the multi-billion dollar property dispute involving late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor’s estate, the Supreme Court on Thursday reminded his mother and his wife of the transience of life and said it is always better to resolve issues amicably than fight endlessly. The court-ordered mediation process hit a snag before it began, with Kapoor’s mother Rani Kapoor alleging that two new independent directors were being appointed to the company to dilute her say, and Priya Kapoor claiming that it was being done at the behest of the RBI. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuiyan appealed to them to be sympathetic and not go into the arbitration with a biased mind. The SC also ordered not to appoint any director. The bench asked Priya to treat her mother-in-law with some care, pointing out that she is 80 years old and grieving. It urged both parties not to do anything that derails the mediation process. “End the dispute amicably, or it will be a very long drawn out battle,” the bench said.Asking both sides to compromise somewhat, the SC said, “We all came into this world empty-handed, and we have to leave the world empty-handed. All we carry is our soul. We bring our soul and leave with soul.”As the parties expressed their willingness to participate in the mediation, the SC appointed former CJI DY Chandrachud as the mediator on May 7 and asked them to refrain from making public statements.
