The interaction began after X user Muthukrishnan Dhandapani claimed in a detailed post that Gandhi had been his client for mutual fund investments since 2013, when the Congress-led UPA government was in power.
Dhandapani, whose X bio identifies him as an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor, said he publicly supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP consistently between 2014 and 2024, but claimed that Rahul Gandhi and his staff did not let political differences affect their professional relationship.
“Never did Rahul or his office staff bring this up to me,” he wrote, adding that Rahul Gandhi “addressed me with respect and never behaved in a haughty manner.”
He also claimed that Gandhi sought his professional input while selecting an important professional some years ago.
“Wanted to post this to show how the main stream media and party IT cells can make someone look completely inhuman,” Dhandapani wrote.
In response to the post, Gandhi jokingly replied: “Muthu ji, your political views are your own – but please expedite my return on investment. 😃”
Feedback quickly gained traction online. As of filing the report, Gandhi’s reply has crossed 1.5 million views, with over 31,000 likes, 5,600 reposts and over 1,000 comments.
Dhandapani later replied, “Pleasantly surprised by your response.”
Several users praised the exchange for its civility and humor.
“I don’t vote for your party, but this tweet made me laugh,” one user wrote.
Another commented, “Professionalism transcends politics. People are usually more nuanced than what we see on screen.”
Some users, however, have questioned whether it is professionally appropriate to publicly disclose a client relationship.
“Such conversations are rare in the new Indian political circles, but I still believe it was unprofessional to share the client’s name in the first place,” wrote one user.
Others continued the humour, with one quipping: “Even Rahul relies on Modi supporters to invest his ‘hard earned’!”
