Vaibhav, the winner of Indian Idol Season 14, is now in the headlines with his song “Man Atkeya Beparwah De Naal” in the film Dhurandhar 2. The story of this success achieved after facing continuous rejection for six years is inspiring.
While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Vaibhav Gupta said that he got this opportunity on the basis of manifestation and hard work. His voice, which came from a small town, has today reached the big screen, and he is getting a lot of love from the audience.
Question: When and how did the dream of singing start?
answer: My father was the first to see this dream. No one in our family was from music, we are from a business family. People used to say that I will also manage the shop, but Papa pulled me out of that thinking.
When I was 3 years old, I was singing a song in the bathroom – “Tere Mast-Mast Do Nain…”. Papa heard it and asked me to sing. It started from there.

Question: How did your music training start?
answer: My music teacher in school, Anand Gupta ji, heard me for the first time and called my father and said, “There is something special in this child.” He taught me in free period and zero period. Even today, I am the first to inform him about every achievement.
Question: Any special moment in childhood which became a turning point?
answer: In a school competition I sang “Tujhe sab hai pata hai na maa” and won. From there, Papa felt that this journey should not be stopped now.
Question: How difficult was the journey till Indian Idol?
answer: Very difficult. I was giving auditions since the age of 11-12. Got rejected for 6 consecutive years. Papa used to bring me from Kanpur to Mumbai or Delhi, a journey of 1100-1200 kilometers. Many times I used to sleep in the car while my uncle used to stand in line. When I became the winner of Indian Idol Season 14, I remember all those moments.
Question: What did you do with the prize money?
answer: I invested in music. Made my own small studio with mic, laptop, audio interface, guitar, so that I could work better on my own voice and work.

Question: How did you get the opportunity of ‘Dhurandhar 2’?
answer: When Dhurandhar 1 released, I went to watch the film with my friend Aditya Pratap. During the interval he said, “I wish you too had a song in this film.” We loved that thing very much. Then suddenly at 2 o’clock in the night on 9th February I got a call that I had to go to music director Shashwat Sachdev and director Aditya Dhar. I had practiced a lot that day, so I was completely prepared.
Question: How was the experience of the first meeting and audition?
answer: I reached his home studio. I was a little nervous seeing both of them there. Shashwat sir asked me to sing. When I sang, Aditya sir said—“There is something special in your voice, you will go far.” Hearing this, my confidence increased and I sang the song with full sincerity.
Question: How was the song ‘Man Atkeya’ prepared?
answer: Initially I sang many scratch versions. About 6 versions of this song were made. The final version that people hear today, I recorded in just 15 minutes at 6 am on the day of the album launch. This song is based on the Kalam of Baba Bulleh Shah, hence it was sung with full emotion and respect.

Question: How was your meeting with Ranveer Singh?
answer: Met him at the music launch. He hugged me and said, “You have sung very well.” The most special thing was that he remembered me by name and even later called me “Vaibhu”. He is a very good person.
Question: What kind of response did you get after the song?
answer: Very good. Reels are being made on Instagram. One day I heard my own song being played at a juice shop—that was a big moment for me.
