Renuka Shahane Statement | Surabhi Fan Obsessive Letter Controversy

While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Renuka Shahane shared many stories related to ‘Surbhi’, fans’ letters and important decisions of her career.

In the 90s, the TV show ‘Surbhi’ had taken Renuka Shahane to every household. There was no social media in that era, but lakhs of letters used to reach the artists. While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Renuka Shahane shared her memories of ‘Surbhi’ days. He told that letters from fans were special for him. One day he received a letter written in blood, which frightened him badly. He also told the reason for choosing TV instead of films after ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’.

Renuka Shahane told that during the period of ‘Surbhi’, she had received a letter written in blood from a fan, which scared her badly.

Question: You were a part of historical shows like ‘Surbhi’ for about 10 years. Today, when everything is on social media, do you remember the era of letters?

answer: I miss you a lot. It was a very beautiful feeling, which we miss today. At that time fans used to write long letters. Those letters not only contained love for us, but also talked about our lives. It seemed as if we had developed a personal relationship with him.

Today it has become easier to contact people, but the sweetness of that wait has been lost. Waiting for an answer was a pleasure in itself. When I look at old post office boxes, it seems that an entire era has been missed there.

Question: Is there any incident related to fan letters during that period which is still remembered?

answer: There are many. Most of all I remember the letters from school children. ‘Surabhi’ was also the favorite program of children at that time. Many children started writing letters to me from ninth-tenth class and continued writing till college. His studies, friends and dreams were all reflected in those letters. It is probably difficult to build such a relationship on social media today.

An incident I can never forget. In my childhood I used to hear that Rajesh Khanna ji used to receive letters written in blood. I never thought that this would happen to me too. One day a letter written in blood arrived at my home. I was really scared after seeing him. I felt that if a person can go to this extent, then it is not love but scary madness. That letter made me very uncomfortable.

Question: So much love, so much popularity, yet did you ever feel that there is still a lot left to achieve?

answer: No. To be honest, I had never imagined what I got. I never stood in front of the mirror and practiced my speech for receiving an award. I came into this field because I loved theatre. When theater became my profession and when I got such opportunities which created history, it was no less than a blessing for me. So I never felt that anything was missing.

Even after the success of ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, Renuka Shahane chose TV instead of films because she was getting strong characters there.

Question: Even after ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, you rejected many films. It must not have been easy to take such a decision?

answer: At that time almost similar characters were being found in films. After liking a role, he started getting similar roles again and again. I felt that more strong and meaningful characters were being written for women on television. There was a chance to do something new every time. That’s why I preferred TV over films.

Question: But at that time, refusing films was considered a big deal?

answer: Maybe because my ambition was different. My goal was not just to be popular. I wanted to do good work. Theater taught me that whether the audience is five or five thousand, the work has to be done with complete honesty. Success not only means becoming a star, but also learning something new from every task. I always worked with the same thinking.

Renuka Shahane said that her goal was not just to be popular but to do good work.

Question: That means for you the quality of work was more important than popularity?

answer: Absolutely. I was not a trained actress. I learned everything by doing. Every new project taught me something new. Popularity started coming on its own. So I never thought about what I had to achieve. For me, doing good work was the biggest achievement.
