India 5th largest military spender at over $92 bn in 2025, says Sipri | India News
New Delhi: India was the fifth largest military spender globally in 2025 and the country increased its military spending by 8.9% to $92.1 billion, according to a report released by arms watchdog group CPR on Monday. The India-Pakistan conflict in May 2025 – which involved the use of warplanes, drones and missiles – increased India’s military spending during the year, the report said.“Pakistan’s military spending increased by 11% to $11.9 billion in 2025. The increase was driven by new orders for aircraft and missiles with China in 2025, as well as payments for earlier purchase agreements, following an armed conflict with India in May,” said CIPRI’s annual “Militants in World Experiment” report.China, the world’s second largest military spender, increased its military spending by 7.4% to $336 billion. It was the 31st consecutive year of growth as China continues its military modernization drive.“The renewed campaign against corruption in military procurement does not appear to have limited spending,” the report said.At $954 billion, US military spending in 2025 was 7.5% lower than in 2024. This reduction is primarily because no new financial military aid for Ukraine was approved during the year. This was in sharp contrast to the previous three years, when a total of $127 billion was approved. The five biggest spenders in 2025 were the United States, China, Russia, Germany and India, together accounting for 58% of global military spending, totaling $1,686 billion.Global world military spending will reach $2,887 billion in 2025, the 11th consecutive year of growth.
