New Delhi: Campaigning for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections ended on Thursday ahead of single-phase polling in all 234 assembly constituencies.This election is expected to be a direct contest mainly between the candidates DMK-led by the ruling secular Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance, which AIADMK The largest component of the state. Among the two national parties, the Congress is in alliance with the DMK BJP Alliance with DMK’s arch-rival AIADMK.Superstar Vijay’s Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) is also in the fray and is likely to attract youth votes.
More than 4,000 candidates are in the fray, including some high-profile names.Counting of votes is scheduled on May 4.
Main Candidates:
MK Stalin And Udayanidhi Stalin (DMK): The Chief Minister and his Deputy Chief Minister son are contesting from Kolathur and Chepauk-Thiruvalikeni respectively. Stalin, a multi-term MLA, has represented Kolathur since 2011, while Udayanidhi is aiming to retain Chepauk-Thiruvalikeni for the DMK as a winning candidate in the 2021 polls.Vijay (TVK): The actor-politician is leading TV from the front and is contesting from two constituencies, Tiruchirappalli East and Perambur. Launched in February 2024, the party has fielded candidates on 234 seats.Edappadi K Palaniswami (AIADMK): AIADMK General Secretary and NDA Chief Minister Mukh Edappadi is contesting from his home constituency. The former chief minister is seeking a fourth consecutive term from Edappadi, which he has held since 2011.and Panneerselvam (DMK): Former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader J. Once a staunch supporter of Jayalalithaa, Panneerselvam made a surprise move to the DMK ahead of the polls. The Stalin-led party has fielded the former chief minister from his stronghold of Bodinayakkanur, which he won for the AIADMK in three consecutive elections—2011, 2016 and 2021.Tamilisai Sundararajan (BJP): A veteran BJP leader and former Governor of Telangana, Tamilisai Sundararajan is contesting from the Mylapore seat. A former president of the party’s Tamil Nadu unit, he also served as the lieutenant governor of Puducherry earlier.Naynar Nagendran (BJP): The BJP state unit chief is contesting from Sattur, withdrawing from the Tirunelveli constituency, which he won in the 2021 elections.
