New Delhi: After taking oath as Chief Minister Dr Tamil NaduTVK chief Vijay signed his first set of official documents, ordered 200 units of free electricity and formed a task force to tackle drugs and ensure women’s safety.Addressing the crowd, Vijay said that he will not deceive people with false promises.“This is a new beginning. A new era of real, secular social justice is beginning now,” he said.In his first speech, Vijay said that he did not come from a royal lineage, but people welcomed and accepted him.He urged the people to give him reasonable time to fulfill his promises.Vijay also accused the previous DMK regime of burdening the state with a debt of Rs 10 lakh crore. He said he was considering releasing a white paper on state finances to ensure transparency going forward.Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath administered the oath of office to Arleka. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Vijay’s parents, actor Trisha Krishnan and many others were present at the event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.Apart from Vijay, nine other TVK leaders – N Anand, Adhav Arjun, KA Sengottaiyan, KG Arunraj, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajamohan, TK Prabhu and S Keerthana – were also sworn in as ministers in his first cabinet.Before the swearing-in ceremony, Vijay welcomed Governor Arlekar to the venue and introduced the minister-designates.The Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 entered the history books after the state gave an unprecedented mandate to Vijay. TVK won 108 out of 234 seats in its first election outing. This marks the first time in Tamil Nadu’s political history that both major Dravidian parties have been voted out of power.However, the TVK fell short of its own majority and later received support from the Congress (5), CPM (2), CPI (2), VCK (2) and IUML (2), all of which were earlier allies of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.
