Panel set up to remove center port obstruction

NEW DELHI: The government has taken steps to stop container piling at India’s busiest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) (Mumbai) and constituted a panel of top officials to clear bottlenecks at 12 major ports. It will meet every week or fortnight to resolve business concerns. The issue of around 35,000-40,000 inbound containers at JNPA was raised in a review meeting chaired by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Representatives of All India Liquid Bulk Importers and Exporters Association were present in the meeting.TOI learned that the pile-up was due to insufficient number of lorry drivers available to transfer this cargo. In an official statement, the shipping ministry said containers bound for West Asia were diverted to JNPA, putting additional pressure on ports and logistics infrastructure.
