New Delhi: Union Home Minister Dr Amit Shah Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav’s demand for quotas for OBC and Muslim women hammered home his party’s avowed opposition to reservation on the basis of religion.He also reiterated the government’s stand that the caste of citizens will be mentioned during the ongoing census to reject SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s claim that the Centre’s decision to add women’s quota to the 2011 census was driven by its reluctance. Opposing the introduction of the Constitution Amendment Bill, Dharmendra said in the Lok Sabha that his party would never support women’s reservation unless the law provided for separate quotas for OBC and Muslim women. “Dharmendra Yadav has made an unconstitutional claim. Our constitution does not allow reservation on the basis of religion at all. I will reiterate the government’s resolve that reservation of Muslims on the basis of religion is unconstitutional,” Shah said, adding that his party’s opposition to faith-based quotas had prompted the Muslim League to demand separate elections for Muslims.
