New Delhi: At least four people were killed and several others were burnt in an explosion at Mundathicode in Kerala’s Thrissur district on Tuesday, officials said. About 40 people are suspected to have been present at the time of the blast. A government official who arrived at the scene said that food was being prepared for “40 workers”, indicating that at least that many could be present. The accident occurred in a shed where fireworks were being set off by a temple devaswam ahead of the upcoming Thrissur Puram. According to residents, the explosion took place around 3:30 pm and sporadic explosions continued in the area, hampering rescue operations. Following the incident, Kerala Health Minister Veena George directed officials to ensure special treatment of the injured and make necessary arrangements at the Government Medical College, Thrissur and Thrissur General Hospital. Nearby hospitals have also been alerted.George also called for deployment of additional ambulances, including Kaniv 108 under service for emergency response and patient transport.Rescue operations are underway, fire service personnel and police are working.(with PTI input)
