NEW DELHI: As counting begins for high-stakes elections in 823 constituencies across four states and one union territory, early postal ballot trends show the Bharatiya Janata Party in the lead. National Democratic Alliance Ahead of West Bengal while wildcard entrant Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) was entering Tamil Nadu.Meanwhile, trends show that the BJP is leading in Assam with 25 seats, while the Indian National Congress-led alliance is ahead in seven.In Kerala, a close contest is brewing between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), both leading by more than 50.In Tamil Nadu, Dravidian Munnetra Kazgam (DMK) was ahead of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, while in West Bengal, the contest was tight. Bharatiya Janata Party And All India Trinamool Congress.These figures are based on preliminary postal ballot trends.As the counting began, there were reports of armored vehicles patrolling Malda in West Bengal. Strong rooms were opened across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry ahead of the counting process.A verbal altercation broke out between polling agents at a counting center in West Bengal, with the TMC alleging that its agents were not allowed to take files and pens inside, while BJP agents were allowed to do so. A TMC polling agent said the rules should be applied uniformly.The BJP, however, accused TMC agents of not carrying identity cards required for entry and alleged that they were causing unnecessary disruption.In Tamil Nadu, heavy three-tier security was deployed on Monday morning for the counting process. Security personnel stationed at entry points, barricaded and checked vehicles.Loyola College was one of the important counting centres, with EVMs for about 4.8 crore voters. Queen Mary College and Anna University were also designated as counting centres.
