Veteran singer Usha Uthup reacted to a post going viral on social media, in which one of her songs was linked to Mamata Banerjee’s recent election defeat. Singer dismissed these claims as false. Actually, this whole issue started when a user on X shared a video of Uthup singing the Bengali song ‘Didi’. The post claimed that the singer was celebrating the defeat of Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The post also said that during the TMC rule, cut money was demanded for her programs, due to which she left Kolkata and moved to Mumbai. The user wrote that now she has returned. Singer called the claims wrong. Reacting to these claims, Usha Uthup wrote on Instagram, ‘A post about me is going viral on social media platform X, Instagram and WhatsApp. I want to make it clear that many of the things said in that post are wrong and misleading. The song in question is a Bengali song. It was created several years ago and is inspired by an Arabic tune. I have been singing it only as a musical performance for the last 20 years. Singer further wrote, ‘I also want to clarify that I have been living in Kolkata since 1976. I never left Kolkata and shifted to Mumbai. Kolkata has always been my home and I still love its people and this city very much. At the end of the post, Usha Uthup wrote, ‘The things, comments and stories being spread in that post have nothing to do with me. I do not associate myself with them and do not take any responsibility for them. Please do not unnecessarily drag me into controversies with which I have nothing to do. Lots of love, didi (Usha Uthup). TMC lost in Bengal elections. It is noteworthy that recently Bharatiya Janata Party achieved a landslide victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The party won 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, while the All India Trinamool Congress was voted out of power after 15 years. The party’s seat tally dropped from 215 to 80 and Mamata Banerjee also lost her Bhawanipur seat. BJP leader Subhendu Adhikari defeated him by a margin of over 15,000 votes. Subhendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first BJP Chief Minister of the state on 9 May 2026.
