Mamata appears as lawyer in HC, BCI seeks advocate status details
New Delhi: Hours after former chief minister Mamata Banerjee appeared before the Calcutta High Court in the garb of an advocate on Thursday, the Bar Council of India (BCI) asked the West Bengal Bar Council to provide details of her enrollment as an advocate, whether her license to practice was suspended during her tenure as chief minister, and the date of its restoration.Writing to the Bar Council of West Bengal, BCI Principal Secretary Shrimant Sen said details are needed to determine whether Banerjee is entitled to wear the garb of an advocate as soon as she ceases to hold public office from 2011 to 2026.The BCI sought certified copies of the original records relating to Banerjee from the state advocate’s roll, enrollment register, certificate of practice record, internal/receipt register, suspension or termination of practice record, recovery record and any related file notings or orders.WB asked the Bar Council to preserve the original records, BCI said the required information should reach within two days.
