Describing the expressway stretch as a “pilgrimage”, Modi said it would become a lifeline for UP’s development, opening up new economic opportunities. He added that the corridor would not only facilitate rapid transit but also act as a gateway for industrial growth and job creation. “Gone are the days when it took years to build a road. There was a time when projects were on file,” he said. Apparently to the opposition, Modi said the foundation slabs used to be laid during the polls but the projects were never implemented despite the coming and going of governments. He criticized previous governments for ignoring the interests of farmers who were facing problems of storage and transportation. “Their problem will be solved now and they will get higher income,” he said. Modi said a new industrial corridor will be developed along the Ganga Expressway. “The previous government did not even dream of industrial corridors in various places including Hardoi,” he said. The Prime Minister said that UP, which was earlier billed as a “Bimaru” state, is now striving to become a $1 trillion economy. “It’s a huge goal. And it requires an equally big preparation,” he said. “The economic development of UP is becoming a strategic strength of India today,” he said. “There was a time when UP was characterized by its potholed roads. The same state now has the highest number of expressways,” he said.
