West Bengal Elections: NIA to investigate bomb recovery in Tinderbox blast

KOLKATA: The Center has ordered an NIA probe into the recovery of 79 crude bombs in Bhangar on Saturday.“The Central Government is of the opinion that a Scheduled offense under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 has been committed in the instant case and the above case relates to illegal storage and handling of explosives and crude bombs to endanger the life and property of citizens, thereby intending to create fear and terror in the minds of the people.”A team of North Kashipur police station raided an abandoned house near a graveyard in Poelpara on Saturday. Police said it recovered “79 round-shaped objects tied with jute rope, resembling crude bombs and other incriminating material”.No one has been arrested in this incident yet. Sources said the NIA may interrogate local strongman Wahidul Islam in the case.On Saturday, tension erupted in Bhangar when some locals allegedly assaulted Wahidul, the main accused in the March 19 blast case, after he suddenly returned to the area. Wahidul was absconding since the incident. According to sources, the residents saw Wahidul in Chak Moricha Tetultala Ghat area. They surrounded him and beat him up before handing him over to the police.Bhangar is locked in a fierce electoral battle with Trinamool’s Sawkat Mullah pitted against ISF chief Nausad Siddique. The Trinamool lost the seat to Siddique in 2021, but Bhangar powered Trinamool’s Saini Ghosh’s victory from Jadavpur in the Lok Sabha elections.
