New Delhi: Congress President Dr Mallikarjun Kharge The prime minister was severely attacked on Thursday Narendra Modi On the US President Donald TrumpControversial ‘hellhole’ comment referring to India. He questioned the government’s silence and questioned whether PM Modi was ‘scared’.Referring to the controversy in his post on X, Kharge wrote: “Modiji’s dear friend, “Namaste Trump” shared a note abusing India and using a very insulting word. Modiji is completely silent on this ridiculous statement.” He also quoted the External Affairs Ministry’s brief response, writing: “MEA spokesperson said ‘I am leaving it there’. Narendra Modi ji, what are you afraid of?”The Congress leader further highlighted the contribution of Indians in the US, asking why the government was not raising the issue at a higher level. “Indians have played a vital role in America’s success. What is preventing us from elevating it to the highest levels of American government?” He saidEscalating his attack, Kharge linked the issue to broader Indo-US relations, citing trade tensions, earlier diplomatic exchanges and tariff disputes. He alleged that at various times the government had failed to protect India’s interests.“From structuring the Indo-US trade deal to Mr. Trump’s earlier claims of mediating to stop the war during Operation Sindoor, from laughing in front of Mr. Trump when he said ‘BRICS is dead’ to America imposing 50% tariffs on India – at every step Modiji has mortgaged India’s interests!” He wroteHe urged the Prime Minister to respond despite the ongoing election campaign, hoping that PM Modi would find time to address what he called the ‘fear and anger of 140 crore Indians’.The comments came after the US president re-shared an anti-immigration post on his platform Truth Social that referred to India and China in derogatory terms.“A child here becomes a citizen instantly, and then they bring the whole family from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet. You don’t have to go very far to see that. English is no longer spoken here. That the immigrant class that comes in today has almost no loyalty to this country, which it hasn’t always had,” the statement said. The statement alleged systemic bias in the employment and immigration system. “You have to be India or China because almost all internal systems are set up to be run by Indians and Chinese.” The Post also claims that the integration seen in previous waves of European immigration is “long overdue,” arguing that the United States has shifted from a “melting pot” to a “cash pot.”MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a media briefing that the government has taken note of the reports but declined to elaborate. “We’ve seen some reports. I’ll leave it at that,” he said.
