‘Using women as decoy’: Opposition slams PM Modi over reservation bill address | India News
New Delhi: Opposition leaders on Saturday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Women’s Reservation Bill speech where he accused the TMC, Congress, DMK and its allies of being guilty of “feticide” by not passing the quota bill in the Lok Sabha.TMC MP Derek O’Brien said, “Narendra, the worst form of insult to women is to use them as decoys* to try to pass a restriction bill”.TMC MP Mahua Maitra dismissed the Prime Minister’s speech as “dreambaji”, adding that “women’s reservation has already been passed in 2023 and notified 2 days ago”.“Hello @narendramodi – your dramebaazi and your Godi media script will not hide the truth – women’s reservation already passed in 2023 and notified 2 days ago. Nothing will stop you from implementing what the TMC has done now and giving 1/3 of the 543 seats to women,” he said. In his address to the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi called the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which demanded 33% reservation for women and expansion of seats to 816 ahead of the 2029 elections, a major setback for women nationwide, apologizing for its failure to pass despite government efforts.“Today, I have come to speak to the mothers, sisters and daughters of the country. Today, every citizen of India is witnessing how India’s dream of women power has been ruthlessly crushed. Despite our best efforts, we have not succeeded. For this, I sincerely apologize to all the mothers and sisters,” he said.“For us, national interest comes first. But for some people, when party interest becomes everything, women’s empowerment and nation’s interests suffer. This time too. The women of this country have paid the price for the selfish politics of parties like Congress, DMK, TMC and SP,” he added.
