‘Yadav Ji ki…’ doesn’t defame community: Supreme Court | India News
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a plea to ban or change the title of upcoming film ‘Yadav Ji Ki Love Story’, saying the name does not portray the Yadav community in a bad light.A bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuiyan dismissed the plea filed by the head of the Vishwa Yadav Parishad. Its main complaint was that the name of the film reflected the Yadav community in a bad light in the society.“We fail to understand how the title of a film can reflect the community in a bad light. The title…there is no adjective or any word anywhere that portrays the Yadav community in a bad light,” Justice Nagarathna said. The bench termed the apprehensions as “totally baseless” and dismissed the plea. The bench set aside its earlier order in a similar case related to ‘Ghoskhor Pandat’ where it asked the producer to change the title of that movie.“The word Ghoshkhor…means corruption. Hence a negative connotation was attached to the community. In the instant case, no such negativity is attached to the Yadav community. None of the reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2) of the Constitution (reasonable restrictions on freedom of speech and expression) or the community was in any way brought into disrepute. Negative means. The writ petition is accordingly dismissed,” the order said. The petitioner alleged that the title created an offensive stereotype against the community and raised concerns about the portrayal of female leads. During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner argued that while they were not opposed to inter-communal marriage, the depiction of a woman in the film was unacceptable.“A lady cannot be promoted like this,” said the counsel, claiming that the film is based on a true story. However, Bench remained unconvinced, classifying the film as a work of fiction.
