Puducherry: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that the purity of voter list is the bedrock of democracy and ensured that no eligible voter was excluded after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and no ineligible person was included in the final voter list.Kumar was here on Wednesday, leading a seven-member team to meet Puducherry officials to review preparations for the 2026 assembly elections in the union territory. While briefing reporters outlining new initiatives introduced in the upcoming elections, Kumar said the commission has decided to install mobile deposit counters at all polling stations and print color photos of candidates in ballot units, following public requests, as they could not identify candidates with black-and-white photos.Kumar said polling in Puducherry has been peaceful, fair and transparent with high voter turnout (above 85%) in the past and added that Puducherry has emerged as a model for the rest of the country in conducting elections. He said that all polling stations (1,099) in Puducherry will be equipped with webcasting facilities. To a question on free distribution even before political parties finalize alliances and announce their candidates, Kumar said the commission would curb this abuse once the code of conduct comes into effect. “We have issued strict instructions to enforcement agencies to prevent such malpractices and ensure a free, fair and transparent election process,” he said.Earlier with Kumar, Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek JoshiInteracted with representatives of recognized national and state political parties and expressed their views and opinions on the smooth conduct of elections. The seven-member team included Deputy Election Commissioners Manish Garg, Pawan Kumar Sharma and Sanjay Kumar and Director General Ashish Goyal.
