Put US trade deals 'on hold', renegotiate, Congress tells govt

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday demanded that the India-US trade deal be “put on hold” and “renegotiate” the terms of the deal in the wake of the US Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate the reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has accused Prime Minister Modi of being “uncompromising”, alleging that his (Modi’s) “betrayal” of trade deals has now been exposed. “He cannot renegotiate. He will surrender again.” In an X post, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharg wrote: “Certain foreign policy or unilateral capitulation? Why didn’t the Modi government wait for the US SC verdict on tariffs before jumping into a trap deal, which took huge concessions from India?” Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the ‘Framework of Interim Agreement’ contained a provision that in case one country changes the terms, the other country can do the same. Referring to Trump’s statement that trade deal remains after SC decision, Ramesh said Modi needs to make it clear that the ‘interim agreement framework’ cannot be implemented in the current scenario. Party general secretary Randeep Surjewala asked if the Modi government would now announce in “national interest” that it would buy cheap Russian and Iranian crude oil.
