Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Italy on Tuesday evening on the last and most important stop of his extensive European tour of five countries. This visit, being held on the special invitation of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, is PM Modi’s first official bilateral visit to Italy.
During this visit, which is considered very special strategically and diplomatically, PM Modi will meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni Will hold extensive bilateral talks with India and will interact with leading industrialists (CEOs) of both the countries. Apart from this, he will also visit the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), reiterating India’s commitment towards global food security.
According to a senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this will be the 8th meeting between the two Prime Ministers from the year 2023, which will be the first between India and Italy Testifies of the strengthening relations between. Meloni’s visit to India in March 2023 and then his participation in the G-20 summit had laid a strong foundation for this friendship. Now through this visit, both the leaders will review the progress made under the ‘Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29’ and finalize the roadmap for cooperation in defence, stopping funding against terrorism and new areas.

Business worth ₹1.3 lakh crore, now big target by 2029
Italy has currently emerged as India’s fourth largest trading partner in the European Union (EU). Bilateral trade between the two countries has reached 14.25 billion euros (about Rs 1.3 lakh crore) in the year 2025. Now both the countries have set a very ambitious target of increasing it to 20 billion euros by the year 2029.
Italian companies have invested more than 3.66 billion dollars in India, while after the acquisition of Italy’s Iveco Group by Tata Motors, the enthusiasm of Indian companies has also increased in Europe.
Defense, AI and support of 2.5 lakh Indians
Defense and Security: Both countries are now exploring possibilities of co-development and co-production of military equipment. Recently Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto also visited India.
cutting-edge technologies: Many joint projects will be approved under the ‘Cooperation Program 2025-27’ in the fields of quantum technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), green hydrogen and clean energy.
Indian Community: There are approximately 1.87 lakh to 2.5 lakh Indians living in Italy, which is the largest group of Indian immigrants in the European Union. Through the ‘Migration and Mobility Agreement’, the path is being made easier for the citizens and students of both the countries (currently 5100+ students).
Additionally, Italy is also playing an active role in the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the India-led Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) by appointing it as Special Envoy, making this visit a game-changer in enhancing mutual coordination on global challenges.
