A massive fire broke out in a coastal village in Sandakan district of Sabah state of Malaysia on Sunday. About 200 houses were completely destroyed in the accident. The local fire department received information about the fire at around 1:32 am on Sunday. According to Sandakan District Fire and Rescue Chief Jimmy Lagung, the fire spread very quickly due to strong winds and the houses being very close to each other.

A major obstacle in the efforts to extinguish the fire was the low tide condition in the sea, due to which the fire brigade had to struggle a lot in gathering water sources. The incident happened in one of those ‘water villages’ in Sabah, where wooden houses are built on stilts.

These areas are often home to poor communities, indigenous groups and people without citizenship. According to official figures, about 445 people have been displaced so far, who have been sent to a temporary relief center in Sandakan.

The fire targeted poor settlements, which are extremely vulnerable to fire due to their specific structure. These houses made of wood rest on pillars on the sea shore. Within no time, dozens of houses were engulfed in flames and hundreds of families saw their homes burning before their eyes.

malaysia Sabah Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed grief over the incident and said the federal government was working closely with Sabah authorities. He said through a Facebook post that his priority is to provide basic assistance and temporary accommodation to the affected people. He has given instructions to provide immediate assistance at the ground level and ensure the safety of the victims.

The number of people registered in relief centers is continuously increasing. The administration is now busy assessing the damage and planning the rehabilitation of these families, while the fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
