The protests that started in Manipur over the alleged murder of six Liangmai Naga civilians have still not stopped. The economic blockade, which continued since June 5, reached its 28th day on Thursday, July 2. In view of the situation, the administration has increased security on National Highway-2 (NH-2). The protesters are adamant on demanding justice for the victims and arrest of the accused, while the police is investigating the entire matter.
The protest began following the incident on May 13, in which six Liangmai Naga civilians were alleged to have been abducted and later killed. Their bodies were recovered after about a month. The protesters allege that armed Kuki militants were involved in this incident. However, the police say that the investigation of the entire matter is still going on and all aspects are being investigated.
In protest against this incident, Naga organizations had started economic blockade from June 5. On Thursday, July 2, this movement reached its 28th day. The protesters are still adamant on their demand for early arrest of the culprits and justice for the victims’ families.
Security increased on NH-2
In view of the long ongoing agitation, the administration has increased security in Namduilong area of Imphal West. Here Manipur Along with the police, Central Armed Police Force (CRPF) personnel have also been deployed. The objective of the administration is to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident.
According to the police, about 40 volunteers from Liangmai Naga community and women from Meitei community were monitoring the vehicles at Namduilong intersection. The protesters were stopping vehicles loaded with goods and essential commodities going from Imphal to Kangpokpi. However, security forces, essential services like ambulances and some passenger vehicles were allowed to move. Police say that the people doing the blockade are adding more people in their support. The administration fears that if an attempt is made to vacate the highway, tension may increase.
On the other hand, people of Kuki-Jo community in Kangpokpi district are also protesting since June 30. Their demand is that normal movement of vehicles should be resumed on NH-2. In such a situation, the area around the highway remains sensitive.
Vehicle carrying telecom equipment set on fire
Meanwhile, a separate incident also came to light in Imphal East in the early hours of Thursday, July 2. A vehicle going to Kangpokpi carrying telecom equipment was asked by the security forces to return back to Imphal in view of the law and order situation. While returning, the protesters stopped the vehicle. They alleged that tobacco products and some other banned items were being carried in it. After this the vehicle was set on fire.
As soon as information about the incident was received, the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. However, by then the vehicle was badly damaged in the fire. A case has been registered in this matter and investigation has been started. Police is trying to identify the people involved in the arson. At the same time, security has been increased in the entire area and the situation is being constantly monitored.
