Imagine, your car is about to reach a blind turn where the vehicle coming from the front is not visible. Only then will the vehicle give an alert of a possible collision. The central government is preparing to make such technology mandatory in new vehicles for road safety. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft of amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. It is proposed to make vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system mandatory in vehicles manufactured from October 1, 2028. This change is proposed to be implemented on L (two-wheeler, e-scooter, auto-rickshaw), M (car, SUV, taxi, passenger bus) and N (pickup, truck, other goods vehicles) category vehicles. From October 1, 2027, vehicles having this system will have to follow the AIS-230 standard. Suggestions and objections can be given on this draft till 23rd August. What is technology, how will driving change? 1. What is Vehicle-to-Vehicle Technology? Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) is a wireless communication system. In this, vehicles moving on the road share information like their location, speed, direction and brakes among themselves. With this, vehicles can predict each other’s presence in advance. 2. How will this technology work in vehicles? Every V2V vehicle will continuously send Basic Safety Messages (BSM). Nearby vehicles will receive these and assess a possible collision. The driver will get an immediate alert in case of danger. In some advanced vehicles, the system will also be able to apply emergency brakes automatically. 3. What is the biggest benefit, when will it be implemented? There will be advance warning in situations like blind turns, intersections, fog, vehicles hidden behind big trucks or sudden brakes. With the installation of this technology, accidents related to rear collisions, intersections and blind spots can be reduced. It is proposed to make this system mandatory in all vehicles manufactured from October 1, 2028. 4. What are the challenges and apprehensions regarding this? According to technology experts, this system based on wireless communication will also have challenges like cyber security, data theft and location tracking.
