Raj Babbar was born on 23 June 1952.

No big actor was ready to play the villain Ramesh Gupta in the film, who was to be shown raping the characters of Zeenat Aman and Padmini Kolhapure. Every actor was afraid that this role would spoil his image.

Then a newcomer actor agreed to this role. The film became a blockbuster as soon as it was released. The acting of that new actor was so strong that when he reached the premiere of the film with his mother, everyone started hating him after watching the film.

Raj Babbar was born in a Punjabi family

Raj Babbar was born in a Punjabi family. Both his grandfather and father worked in the railways. After partition the family settled in Tundla, Agra.

Childhood was spent in rented houses. He completed his schooling from Agra College and graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in 1975. Method acting training in NSD showed him the path from street theater to the big screen.

Raj Babbar did his early education from Faiz-e-Aam Inter College, Agra.

After coming to Mumbai to act in films, initially he did very small roles in about 14 films. His first film was ‘Sharda’, in which he had only one dialogue.

At the same time, he got his big break in 1980 with B.R. Got it from Chopra’s film ‘Insaaf Ka Taraju’. In this, Raj Babbar played the role of rapist Ramesh Gupta.

Mother was angry after watching the film, thinking it to be tears of happiness she touched her feet

Raj Babbar went to Delhi with his mother for the premiere of the film. The mother had tears in her eyes after seeing the rape scene.

Raj Babbar had told in the TV show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’, “When the film premiered, I went with my mother to Vigyan Bhawan (Delhi) to watch it. When we were sitting in the interval watching the film, no one recognized us. We kept watching the film. After that, I was getting abused a lot at the end. Even during the interval, every man was abusing me. Especially the women were abusing me a lot.”

He had further said, “So my mother felt very bad. When we sat in the taxi, my mother started crying. I felt tears of joy coming that her son had worked in the film. I touched my mother’s feet in joy. Then she caressed my head and said, ‘Son, we will eat less, but don’t do such a thing.'”

The actor had further said, “Then I felt that my drama school training and all my hard work had succeeded. With these words of my mother, I felt that I had achieved success. My mother also understood that I do similar work. If I did not do this, I would not have been successful in that role.”

Raj Babbar’s role in ‘Nikah’ (1982) with Salma Aga and Deepak Parashar was memorable. The role of a professor opposite Smita Patil in ‘Aaj Ki Awaaz’ (1984), where he turns a vigilante, won him critical acclaim. He received the Filmfare Best Actor nomination for this role.

Raj Babbar appeared in the role of villain in many films in his career. These include ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ (1980), ‘Saazish’ (1988), ‘Aankhen’ (1993), ‘Dalal’ (1993), ‘Andaz’ (1994), ‘The Gambler’ (1995), ‘Yarana’ (1995), ‘Barsaat’ (1995), ‘Ziddi’ (1997), ‘Gundagardi’ (1997), These include films like ‘Daag: The Fire’ (1999) and ‘Indian’ (2001).

Family wanted to convert Muslim wife’s religion

The love story of Raj Babbar and his first wife Nadira Zaheer started from theater and reached the difficult tests of life. The first meeting in NSD gradually turned into deep love. At that time, Nadira was Raj Babbar’s senior and used to direct plays. Raj Babbar acted in a play written by Nadira.

Nadira was four years older than Raj Babbar and belonged to a Muslim family, while Raj was a Punjabi Hindu. At the time of marriage, Raj Babbar’s family wanted Nadira to change her religion and adopt a name like Nirmala or Nirdesh, but Raj Babbar clearly said, “If she is Nadira, she will remain Nadira.”

He neither converted his religion nor changed his name. Raj Babbar’s father also fully supported him in this decision. Both of them got married in 1975 under the Anand Karaj ritual in the Gurudwara without any religious conversion. From this marriage they had two children, Juhi and Arya.

Raj Babbar’s wife Nadira has written many plays like ‘Sakku Bai’, ‘Dayashankar Ki Diary’, ‘Jee Jaisi Aapki Marzi’ and ‘Shabash Anarkali’.

Even before her death, Smita had said – I will not stay with you for long.

After entering the film world, Raj Babbar met actress Smita Patil. Both came close during the shooting of the film ‘Bheegi Palkein’ (1982). This relationship became so deep that Raj Babbar left his first wife and children and married Smita in 1983. However, in 1986, Smita gave birth to son Prateik (Prateik Babbar) and he died due to complications during delivery.

Smita Patil had also predicted her death a few months before her death. She had many times told Mahesh Bhatt that she was not a guest for long, because the life line in the lines on her hands was very short.

Smita also used to tell her husband Raj Babbar, “I will not be able to support you for long.” Due to this, he would often shut them up in anger. In such a situation, Smita used to say to her makeup artist Deepak Sawant, “When I die, wake me up decorated like a new bride.”

Smita Patil’s demise shook Raj Babbar to the core. In such difficult times, Nadira rose above the complaints, left behind the past bitterness, and gave a place to Raj Babbar in her life again.

Raj Babbar and Smita Patil had worked together in many films like ‘Bheegi Palkein’ (1982), ‘Aaj Ki Awaaz’ (1984), ‘Angare’ (1986) and ‘Waris’ (1988).

Son did not invite Raj Babbar to the wedding

There has been a lot of distance in the relationship between Raj Babbar and Smita Patil’s son Prateek in the last few years. When Smita Patil passed away, Prateek was only 15 days old. After which Prateek was brought up by his maternal grandparents.

In February 2025, Prateek married actress Priya Banerjee for the second time, but he did not invite Raj Babbar and his step-siblings to this event. Not only this, she officially removed the surname ‘Babbar’ from her name and changed it to ‘Prateek Smita Patil’.

Recently, Raj Babbar’s son from his first wife, Arya, also accused his son from his second wife, Prateik, of taking advantage of his father’s property and money.

Talking to Vicky Lalwani, he said, “We did not understand why he suddenly stopped contacting us as soon as the divorce case with his ex-wife was resolved. I sent him many messages, called him several times, but got no response.”

Arya had said, “When your (Prateek’s) career is not going well and you need pocket money from your father to survive, then he is your father. When you have to live in the house which your father had bought for Smita Ma, then also he is your father. When you want all the benefits, he is still your father, but when it comes to accepting and respecting him as your father in front of the society, then he is no longer your father.

He also said that it is very sad that Smita Maa, for whom my father had left his family, today the son of the same Smita Maa is not ready to accept him as his father.

Shahrukh asked a funny question to Raj Babbar

Shahrukh Khan’s father Mir Taj Mohammad Khan used to run the canteen of the National School of Drama (NSD), where Shahrukh used to spend hours after school in his childhood and it was there that he also met Raj Babbar. Shahrukh used to fondly call Raj Babbar as ‘Babbar Sher Uncle’.

In Aap Ki Adalat, Shahrukh had jokingly said that he had also learned to do mischief from Raj Babbar.

Narrating an incident, he said that there was a kissing scene in a play. He used to do big real life plays, so he (Raj Babbar) had a kissing scene with Rohini ji (Rohini Hattangadi). Salman gifted a luxury car as a surprise

Raj Babbar played the role of Kareena Kapoor’s father in Salman Khan’s film ‘Bodyguard’.

According to the report of Times of India, he did not even take any fee from Salman Khan for this role. However, on the last day of completion of the shooting, Salman gifted a luxury four-wheeler car to Raj Babbar without informing him. Raj Babbar became so emotional with Salman’s surprise and generosity that he had tears in his eyes.

In the 2011 film ‘Bodyguard’, Salman played the role of Lovely Singh and Raj Babbar played the role of Sartaj Rana.
