For Indians living in America who are thinking of getting American citizenship, this task may now be more expensive than before. America’s Homeland Security Department has made a new proposal in which it has been said that there will be fee waiver and removal of low fee option. If this proposal is implemented then the entire process of acquiring citizenship through naturalization will become very expensive.
Under this proposal, the fees for Form N-400 will be increased. This is the same form that people holding green cards use to get American citizenship. Currently, for applying on paper, this fee is $760, which can be increased to $1330. On applying online, the fee may increase from $710 to $1280, which means the fee is going to increase by about 75 to 80 percent.
Apart from this, there is also a proposal to increase the fees for Form N-336, which is used by people whose citizenship application is rejected and they want to re-examine it.
This decision can prove to be a big blow for Indians. Six percent of those who got American citizenship in the year 2024 were Indians, which was second after Mexico’s 13 percent. In the last five years, about 3.7 lakh Indians have acquired American citizenship through naturalization.

Immigration experts say that this proposal will make it difficult for people with low income to get citizenship. Former DHS official Adam Klein said that this is a big change and that such an increase in fees could make citizenship a facility that may go away for people with limited income.
According to him, getting citizenship gives people the opportunity for economic progress and participation in the society, hence high fees can weaken these objectives.
On the other hand, the Department of Homeland Security said that the current fees do not cover the full cost of applications and this change is part of the fee review conducted from time to time.
