Heatwave Pregnancy Complications: The heat of summer is at its peak and the heat of the sun is now becoming unbearable in many states of the country including the capital Delhi. The temperature here has crossed 45 degrees Celsius, due to which it is becoming difficult for common people to live. But its most dangerous effect is on pregnant women. According to the report, the number of women with pregnancy related problems has increased significantly due to the heat in Delhi hospitals. Doctors say that the rising temperature is not only deteriorating the health of the mother, but is also hindering the growth of the child in the womb.
Risk of premature delivery due to heat
Dr. Renu Malik, Director of Malik Radix Healthcare, says that due to the heat, cases of pre-term labor (premature delivery) are increasing. Increase in body temperature causes stress which can start the delivery process prematurely.
According to doctors, when the temperature is around 45 degrees, there is a lack of water in the body. This reduces blood flow in the uterus and hormones like oxytocin may become active prematurely.
Bad effect on child’s weight and growth
Heat is fatal not only for the mother but also for the fetus. The report suggests that due to heat stress, nutrition does not reach the placenta properly. The direct result of this is ‘low birth weight’ i.e. less weight of the child at the time of birth.
Apart from this, the risk of pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure) also increases in women who stay in sunlight for a long time. Health experts advise to avoid going out between 11 pm and 4 pm and keep the body hydrated.
