Adhik Maas 2026: Once in many years, an additional month is added to the Hindu calendar, called Adhikamas. A similar special year is going to come in the year 2026 also. This month is also called Malmas or Purushottam month. This time is considered more for worship, meditation and introspection than for festivals. According to astrologers, the Hindu calendar runs according to the Moon, which is about 11 days shorter than the Sun’s year. To balance this difference, an additional month is added every 3 years, which is called Adhik Maas.
When is Adhikamas in 2026?
According to Drik Panchang, in the year 2026, Adhikamaas will start from 17th May and will last till 15th June. This time it is falling in the month of Jyeshtha, due to which the year 2026 has increased by 1 month. That means this year will last 13 months.
two senior months in a year
A special thing in Vikram Samvat 2083 will be that two Jyeshtha months will fall. One will be the normal Jyeshtha month and the other will be the more senior (Purushottam) month. Due to Adhikamaas, Jyeshtha month will last for about 58-59 days and both the months will meet for some time. This time Adhik Jyeshtha month will start from 17th May 2026 and will end on 15th June 2026. Whereas, the normal Jyeshtha month will start from 22nd May 2026 and will end on 29th June 2026. For this reason, this year is considered very special from the calendar and astronomical point of view.
What to do in Adhikamaas?
– Do charity- Donating food, clothes or necessary things to the poor in Adhikamas is considered very auspicious.
– Donate a lamp- Lighting a lamp every day or on special days provides mental peace.
-Chant the mantra- Chanting the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay’ is auspicious.
– Listen or read religious texts- Listening or reading Shrimad Bhagwat Katha is considered beneficial in this month.
-Take a holy bath- Taking bath in Ganga or any holy river is considered auspicious.
What not to do in Adhikamaas?
Do not start any new work in Adhikamas. Avoid auspicious activities like marriage or engagement. Do not take major decisions related to house warming or land-house. Do not perform rituals like Mundan or Janeu. Avoid big investments or transactions. Do not start the fast or do Udyapan.
