President Emmanuel Macron invited PM Modi to attend the G7 summit in France in 2026. According to a joint statement, he invited India to actively participate in the discussions and preparatory work ahead of the summit, mainly on the key issues of addressing global macroeconomic imbalances and defining a new international partnership.The two leaders reiterated their commitment to a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. “The heightening of relations will strengthen future cooperation between the two countries, to strengthen their sovereignty and decision-making autonomy, and cooperation between India and the European Union to respond together to major challenges facing our world,” the joint statement said.They reiterated their call for reform and effective multilateralism to maintain a just and peaceful international order, address global challenges and prepare the world for emerging developments, including in the technological and economic domains. The two leaders emphasized, in particular, the urgent need to reform the UN Security Council, with France reiterating its support for India’s permanent membership of the council.The two leaders also reiterated their concern over the war in Ukraine, which continues to cause “extreme humanitarian suffering and negative global consequences”.“They emphasized the importance of a cessation of hostilities and expressed support for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy in accordance with the principles of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, including the UN Charter and international law,” the statement said. They agreed to further strengthen joint research, co-design, co-development and co-production of advanced defense platforms including air, naval and land systems and emerging dual-use technologies in line with the ambitious defense industry roadmap agreed to 2024.Building on existing trust in high technology cooperation, both leaders agreed to form a Joint Advanced Technology Development Group to explore opportunities for co-development of emerging and critical technologies in identified niche areas to maintain a competitive military edge and mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities.”
