CEA: Technology adoption must be aligned with mass employment

New Delhi: AI could either expand India’s demographic advantage or undermine it, depending on the choices made now, Chief Economic Adviser V Ananth Nageswaran said on Monday, calling for concerted national action. Speaking virtually during a session on ‘Employment in the AI Age’ at the AI Impact Summit, Nageswaran said technology adoption must be deliberately aligned with mass employment, rather than allowing it to evolve on its own. “It’s not going to happen by flow,” he said. “This requires political will, state capacity and national commitment to align technological adoption with mass employment.” Framing AI as a pivotal moment in India’s growth journey, he argued that the outcome will be built through implementation. “India may be the first large society where human abundance and machine intelligence strengthen, not weaken, each other. The result will not be accidental,” he said. He said the path to co-creating prosperity with AI starts with strengthening primary education and imparting skills that increase employment in a technology-driven economy.
