A sensational incident came to light on Saturday in the campus of the country’s prestigious educational institute IIT Kanpur (IIT-K). Anju Kumari, a 28-year-old junior technician working here, committed suicide by hanging herself in her room. It is being told that just before taking this suicidal step, Anju had a heated argument with her fiance over the phone. Police have recovered a diary from the spot, in which important things have been written.
Anju Kumari, originally from Jadugora, Jharkhand, was posted as a junior technician in IIT Kanpur for the last three years. On Saturday, Anju was talking to her fiance Pankaj, who works in the electricity department of Odisha. During the conversation, an argument started between the two regarding some issue. Initial investigation has revealed that Anju had talked to Pankaj about committing suicide.
Pankaj got scared after listening to Anju. He immediately called a friend living on the campus and asked to know about Anju’s condition. The friend was not available at that time, so he sent his brother to Anju’s house. When brother reached there the room was locked from inside. Despite knocking on the door, no response was received. On suspicion, the hostel warden and police were immediately informed. After this the door was broken.

Everyone was shocked to see the scene inside. Anju was hanging from the fan. He was immediately taken to the campus hospital, where doctors declared him dead. During the investigation, the police found a personal diary from Anju’s room. Anju had recorded the story of her life in a 350-page diary. The last entry in it was made some time before his death. Anju was extremely hurt by her fiance’s scolding.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Kapil Dev Singh said that another shocking aspect has come to light in the investigation. Anju’s brother had also committed suicide about a year ago. After that incident, Anju was in deep shock and depression. However, family members say that his mental condition was improving in the last few months. She seemed emotionally stable.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said that the marriage talks between the two families had been finalized. The engagement was going to happen very soon. Prima facie it seems to be a case of mental stress arising due to personal and family reasons. Police have sent Anju’s body for postmortem. His family members in Jharkhand have been informed.
