Movie Review: Baby Do Die Do: A game of silent death in the streets of Mumbai… Is the film just style or a powerful thriller too?

Nowadays, stories of bullets, gangsters and revenge are no longer new in crime thriller films. In this case, Baby Doo Die Doo stands out because of its main character. There is a contract killer who can neither speak nor hear, but executes every mission without making any noise. Director Nachiket Samant has not only made this story an action film, but has also made the changing picture of Mumbai city and its dark face a part of the story. The film does not surprise at every turn, but remains interesting till the end due to its style, atmosphere and strong acting. The length of this film is 2 hours 5 minutes. Dainik Bhaskar has given it a 3 star rating out of 5. How is the story of the film? The story begins with two twin sisters, who reach a closed hotel in their childhood. There she witnesses a murder. In this incident, one sister dies, while the other’s life is changed forever. Years later, the same girl becomes Mumbai’s most dangerous contract killer by the name of Baby Karmarkar (Huma Qureshi). She is deaf and mute, but executes each of her missions with utmost precision. His identity is his special umbrella, which becomes a deadly weapon when needed. Baby is brought up by Papa (Chunky Pandey), who keeps assigning him one mission after another. But behind every betel nut, Baby’s own quest is also hidden. She wants to reach her twin sister’s killer. Meanwhile, Sidhu (Rachit Singh) enters his life and for the first time he sees hope of getting out of this bloodshed world. Will Baby be able to overcome her past? Will he get a chance to reach his sister’s killer? And will the world of crime let him go so easily? The film slowly answers these questions. How is the acting of the star cast? The biggest strength of this film is Huma Qureshi. Without speaking long dialogues, just through eyes, facial expressions and body language, he has portrayed Baby’s pain, anger and loneliness very effectively. His calm face and suddenly violent style gives the film a different identity. Rachit Singh brings emotional balance to the story. Their character is written with simplicity and the chemistry between the two gives relief to the film. Chunky Pandey is seen in a different character than before. His calm but mysterious style impresses. Sikandar Kher once again plays a gray-shaded character and increases the tension every time he comes on screen. Seema Pahwa also makes an impact in her limited screen time. How is the direction and technical aspects of the film? Director Nachiket Samant has tried to save this film from becoming a traditional crime thriller. He has tried to strike a good balance between style and story. Mumbai here emerges not just as a location but as an important character in the story. The rain-soaked streets, old streets, unfinished buildings and the dark face of the city strengthen the atmosphere of the film. Cinematography is one of the biggest strengths of the film. Many frames are reminiscent of international neo noir films. Black and white flashbacks, low-light scenes and use of colors give the story its distinct identity. However, the film is not able to maintain its hold completely. The pace feels a little slow in the first part. The story picks up pace in the second half, but too many characters and too many parallel tracks make the film a bit confusing. Some twists are predictable and some events seem more convenient than necessary. Despite this, the director is successful to a great extent in maintaining the atmosphere and suspense of the film. How is the music of the film? The background score of the film goes well with the story. At many places silence also becomes a part of the story and increases the tension. The songs are short and do not hinder the story. However, there is no song that is remembered long after the film is over. Final Verdict: To watch or not? Baby Do Die Do is one of those films that will be remembered more for its treatment and atmosphere than its story. Huma Qureshi’s strong acting, stylish presentation and the way of making Mumbai an important character in the story makes the film different. However, the slow first half, some predictable twists and too many characters weaken its pace a bit. If you like quirky crime thrillers, strong female leads and stylish films, then Baby Do Die Do is a must watch.
