Famous folk artist of Telangana and Padma Shri awardee Darshanam Mogilaiah has to wander from door to door for the land which he got as an honour. Darshanam is a respected folk artist and one of the rare people to play the unique musical instrument called Kinnara. Kinnara is an instrument of tribal tradition, which was on the verge of extinction, but the efforts of Darshanam Mogilaiah have not only brought it back to life but have also given it recognition in the art world.
To honor his heroic efforts and his unprecedented contribution in the field of art and culture, the government had given him a residential plot of 600 square yards. Darshanam alleges that he has not been able to get this land yet. He says that this land is embroiled in a legal dispute, due to which he is neither able to take possession of it nor is able to obtain a lease in his name.
Mogilaiah met District Collector C. Narayana Reddy during the Prajavani program on Monday and demanded immediate intervention in the matter and a solution. He told the officials that getting the land as an honor should have been a matter of pride for him, but for the last two years he has been forced to make rounds of government offices and courts.
According to Mogilaiah, this plot Telangana K Abdulla is in Kuntalur village of Purmet mandal. This land was allotted to him during the tenure of the previous Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) government. Later Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had handed him the Government Order (GO) related to this allocation. At that time he was hopeful that now his family would be able to become the owner of a permanent property.
However, the artist alleges that there is already a legal dispute going on over the land. For this reason the Revenue Department is not able to provide them clear ownership documents. He said that the government honored him, but he has not received the benefit of that honor till date. Expressing his pain in front of the officials, Darshanam Mogilaiah said, “I was given the land as an honour, but for the last two years, instead of taking advantage of it, I have been making rounds of government offices and courts. The honor which should have provided security to my family has now become a cause of trouble for me.”
He said that so far he has had to spend around Rs 9 lakh to resolve the land issue. This includes litigation in courts and a large portion of lawyers’ fees. Mogilaiah says that it was not easy for a folk artist to raise such a huge amount, but he continued this struggle keeping in mind the future of his family.
The Padmashree awarded artiste said that he wants the dispute to end soon so that he can divide the property among his four children and secure their future. He believes that the benefits of the honor given by the government in recognition of his art practice should reach his family. Mogilaiah also alleged that he had approached Ibrahimpatnam Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) office and Abdullapurmet revenue officials several times in the last two years, but no concrete solution was found. He says that every time he got assurance, but the land dispute remained the same.
He also expressed his displeasure at the district administration. According to Mogilaiah, in the last two years there have been many administrative changes in the district, many officers have come and gone, but their problems could not be solved. He said that despite being a nationally honored artist, his complaint is not being taken seriously. The artist also alleged that the authorities did not give priority to his case. He says that if even a Padmashree awardee has to fight such a long battle to get justice, then the condition of common citizens can be imagined.
Recently Darshanam Mogilaiah met BRS working president K. Also met T. Rama Rao (KTR). It is said that KTR has taken their problem seriously and has assured to take up the matter with the District Collector.
Now Mogilaiah has warned that if this dispute is not resolved soon, he will directly approach Chief Minister A. Will meet Revanth Reddy and demand justice. He says that he has dedicated his entire life to folk art and culture and the honor given by the government should not be limited to papers.
Darshanam Mogilaiah is counted among the greatest artists of the traditional Kinnera art of Telangana. In view of his contribution in reviving this folk art which was on the verge of extinction, he was honored with Padma Shri by the Government of India. In such a situation, their struggle regarding the land given as respect is now raising big questions related to the administrative system and the respect of artists.
