Jaspal Rana, one of the brightest shooters in the history of Indian sports, has passed away. He was 49 years old. After returning from Germany, his health deteriorated and he breathed his last during treatment in Delhi. The news of his demise has created a wave of mourning in the Indian sports world.
From Garhwal to global stage
Born on 28 June 1976 in a Garhwali family of Uttarakhand, Jaspal Rana belonged to a sports-inspired family. His father Narayan Singh Rana was a former army officer and later became the first Sports Minister of Uttarakhand. He inherited the environment of shooting since childhood and his father became his first coach.
At the age of just 12, he showed his talent at the national level, due to which his name started rising rapidly.
Career beginnings and international recognition
He caught the attention of the country by winning the silver medal in the National Shooting Championship held in Ahmedabad in 1988.
After this, in the Junior World Shooting Championship in Milan (Italy) in 1994, he created a sensation at the international level by making a world record score.
He represented India in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and participated in the 10 meter air pistol and 50 meter free pistol events.

Jaspal Rana’s name is recorded in golden letters in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

After his sports career, he made coaching his mission. After 2012, he started grooming young Indian shooters and gave a strong foundation to the new generation of Indian shooting.
From 2018, he became the coach of Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker. There was a brief separation between the two in 2021, but they came together again in 2023 and prepared for the 2024 Olympics.
His training style was considered highly disciplined and of international standard, with practice being conducted in Olympic-like conditions.
Rana always said that coaching is his passion and his aim is to develop players for the world level and not for commercial gains. Many young shooters emerged from his academy in Dehradun who represented India at the national and international level.
