Among the 72 human nadis, Sushumna Nadi is considered to be the most important subtle energy current of the body. According to Yoga Shastra, there are three main nadis in the body – Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. Ida nadis are called Chandra Swar and Pingala is called Surya Swar. Whereas Sushumna Nadi is considered to be situated between the two. When Sushumna is active, the mind becomes stable, calm and in a state suitable for meditation. Therefore it is most suitable for yoga, sadhana and penance.
When breath is coming equally from both the nostrils, it means the Sushumna Nadi is active. In such a situation, no auspicious work should be done. If one has to go on a journey or perform any auspicious work then one should not start it when the Sushumna Nadi is active. And wait for the activation of Ida or Pingala Nadi.
Different pulses need to be activated for different tasks.
Generally, a person’s breath flows more through one nostril at a time. This is called tone. If the left nostril is active then it is called Chandra Swar. And if the right nostril is active then it is considered to be Surya Swar. In yoga and vocal science, it is believed that different notes are beneficial for different tasks. For example, Chandra Swar is considered suitable for mental work, study and meditation. Whereas Surya Swar is beneficial for tasks related to physical work, decision making ability and energy.
Many traditional methods of changing tone are prevalent. The most common method is considered to be changing the position of the body. If a person wants to play the right note, he can lie down on his left side. After some time the right nostril starts becoming active. Similarly, to play the left note on the right note, one should lie on the right side. Or by closing one nostril and breathing, the tone on the other side can be activated.
Sushumna Nadi is good for yoga practice and penance
Apart from this, Anulom-Vilom and Nadi Shodhan Pranayam are considered effective means of balancing the tone. Regular practice controls breathing rate and increases mental concentration. The balance of both the swaras during meditation is considered to be the initial stage of Sushumna awakening. Activation of Sushumna Nadi is considered important in sadhana and meditation. When breathing starts equally from both the nostrils, then Sushumna flows. This state comes for a short time and is considered best for deep meditation. In the yoga tradition, it is associated with mental balance and higher levels of consciousness.
