Heatwave conditions continue over large parts of India with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of severe temperatures in several states.In a press release dated May 20, the IMD said, “Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist over northwest and central India and over eastern India during the next 5 days.“Uttar Pradesh’s Banda recorded 48 degrees CelsiusUttar Pradesh’s Banda district recorded the state’s highest temperature on Wednesday at 48 degrees Celsius, according to the Meteorological Center in Lucknow. Officials said the temperature was 4.5 degrees above normal.The Met department has issued a yellow alert for the next three days in the state, followed by an orange alert as temperatures are expected to remain extremely high.Temperature in Delhi may touch 46 degrees Celsius todayThe national capital is expected to remain under severe heat wave for the next few days.According to the IMD forecast, the maximum temperature in Delhi may touch 46 degrees Celsius on May 21 and 22, while the temperature may range between 44 and 45 degrees Celsius between May 23 and May 26.Punjab, Haryana are reeling under intense heatAs reported by PTI, Punjab and Haryana continued under heat wave conditions on Wednesday, with Rohtak and Bathinda crossing the 46 degree Celsius mark.Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius as scorching conditions continued across the region.Hilly regions like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, however, are experiencing isolated rain and thundershowers.What to expect in the next 5 daysThe IMD has issued a warning of heat wave, hot and humid weather and warm night conditions for the next 5 days in the region.24-26 May: Severe heat wave is likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.May 20-26: Severe heatwave conditions are expected in parts of West Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.20-24 May: Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may witness heat wave conditions.20-24 May: Warm night conditions may prevail over Odisha; Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness May 21-22.20-24 May: Hot and humid weather is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha.Health advice for alert areasRed Alert Area– Extreme care is advised for vulnerable people as the IMD states that heat illness and heat stroke are very likely to occur at all ages.Orange warning zone– The Met Office advises people to drink plenty of water, using ORS and homemade drinks such as lassi, buttermilk and lemon water to stay hydrated.Yellow warning area– Vulnerable groups are advised to avoid heat exposure, wear loose cotton clothes and cover their heads when outdoors.
