The new Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Suvendu Adhikari in West Bengal has taken a big and politically impactful policy decision. The state government on Tuesday announced a complete reshuffle in the Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation list of West Bengal.

Under this new decision, the total OBC reservation in the state has been reduced from 17 percent to just 7 percent. With this step of the government, many Muslim sub-castes which were included in the OBC list during the previous Mamata Banerjee government, will now be out of the scope of reservation.

Decision taken on the orders of Calcutta High Court
The state government has clarified that this decision has been taken in compliance with the historic order of the Calcutta High Court in May 2024. The High Court had clearly ruled in its decision that only 7 percent OBC quota will remain valid in the state, under which only a total of 66 categories will be entitled to reservation. The new government has completely canceled the old list on the basis of this legal order.

At that time, there were 49 caste groups in the OBC-A list and 91 caste groups in the OBC-B list.

After the implementation of the new policy, these castes will now west bengal OBCs will not be eligible for reservation benefits in government jobs and educational institutions.
