SC judges follow through on PM Modi’s ‘save fuel’ appeal
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “save fuel” appeal to citizens amid the Middle East crisis. It ordered that all matters listed on various days including Mondays and Fridays, as well as on partial working days, be heard exclusively through video conferencing till further orders. It “unanimously resolved” to encourage car-pooling arrangements to ensure optimum fuel consumption.Additionally, up to 50% of the registry staff in each branch or division will be allowed to work from home for a maximum of two days a week on a rotational basis, provided the functioning of the court is not affected, ANI reported. The respective Registrars shall have the power to modify or limit the arrangements depending on the management requirements and the essential nature of the work in the particular department. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi himself traveled in a severely trimmed-down convoy, while several senior ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, also reduced the size of their convoys by more than half. The move was widely seen as an attempt by the government to signal that Prime Minister Modi is willing to “practice what it preaches” after urging citizens to reduce fuel consumption through measures such as working from home, virtual meetings and moderate travel.
